Some Problems on the Estimation of Unimodal Densities

چکیده
In this paper, we study, in some new ways, the estimation of unimodal densities. Several methods for estimating unimodal densities are proposed: plug-in MLE, pregrouping techniques, linear spline MLE. Based on the maximum likelihood method, an automatic procedure for estimating a unimodal density as well as its mode is proposed. We also give asymptotic theory for the proposed estimators. An important consequence of this study is that having to estimate the location of a mode does not a ect the limiting behavior of the proposed unimodal density estimate. Simulation studies illustrate the proposed methods.

For the problems of nonparametric estimation of nonincreasing and symmetric unimodal density functions with bounded supports we determine the projections of estimates onto the convex families of possible parent densities with respect to weighted integrated squared error. We also describe the method of approximating the analogous projections onto the respective density classes satisfying some ge...
متن کاملOn a New Bimodal Normal Family
The unimodal distributions are frequently used in the theorical statistical studies. But in applied statistics, there are many situations in which the unimodal distributions can not be fitted to the data. For example, the distribution of the data outside the control zone in quality control or outlier observations in linear models and time series may require to be a bimodal. These situations, oc...
متن کاملConsistency of the Maximum Product of Spacings Method and Estimation of a Unimodal Distribution
The first part of this paper gives some general consistency theorems for the maximum product of spacings (MPS) method, an estimation method related to maximum likelihood. The second part deals with nonparametric estimation of a concave (convex) distribution and more generally a unimodal distribution, without smoothness assumptions on the densities. The MPS estimator for a distribution function ...
متن کاملUnimodal density estimation using Bernstein polynomials
The estimation of probability density functions is one of the fundamental aspects of any statistical inference. Many data analyses are based on an assumed family of parametric models, which are known to be unimodal (e.g., exponential family, etc.). Often a histogram suggests the unimodality of the underlying density function. Parametric assumptions, however, may not be adequate for many inferen...
متن کاملAnother Method for Defuzzification Based on Regular Weighted Point
A new method for the defuzzification of fuzzy numbers is developed in this paper. It is well-known, defuzzification methods allow us to find aggregative crisp numbers or crisp set for fuzzy numbers. But different fuzzy numbers are often converted into one crisp number. In this case the loss of essential information is possible. It may result in inadequate final conclusions, for example, expert...
